Rise up beyond fear...

Chiefs Nation, this is our chance to stop and be an example to this country of what love can do, not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day. Look in the mirror long enough to feel the fear of the violence, to feel the what ifs, and then respond not with fear, hate and judgment, but rather with love for everyone involved and their families.

This is our chance to respond like the best of this country did on 9/11 when we initially had no choice but to feel the pain, but then we chose to help each other through it before fear took over.

This is our chance to accept the reality that this life we live is so very hard, that bad things can and do happen each and every day whether we hear about them or not, that we may never know the answers to the questions about why, but that the only chance we have to live our healthiest and happiest lives is by extending love and grace, not even in the worst of times, but especially in the worst of times. Let’s pull together and not allow fear to tear us even further apart.

And I do understand fear because my police officer son-in-law was there working and couldn’t let my daughter know for a while he was ok. And yes, I would feel the same if he had been involved because I accept the reality of the risk he takes trying to make this community a safer place to live and because I accept the fact there are so many hurting people in this world and some unfortunately turn to violence.

Love and compassion every day, for all human beings is the only way we chip away at the fear that drives so much of our behavior.

I hope we choose to rise up with love, grace and mercy to show why Kansas City is the very special place to live that it is.
